Abstract
The reproductive capacity of male Acanthoscelides obtectus placed every day in the presence of new females is affected by periodical variations. According to the order of mating, females with high fecundity will be succeeded by low fecundity females. Such variations in fecundity, depending on the quantity of secretions deposited in the spermatophore during copulation, depend on changes in the secretory activity of the paragonia during the experiment. The fertilizing capacity of the males also varies, although the rhythm of spermatogenesis shows no variation during the whole life of the insect. The reduction in the fertilizing capacity is due to momentary exhaustion of the spermatozoa stored in the testes and vesiculae seminales. There is no relation between the secretory activity of the paragonia and spermatogenesis, and the reproductive capacity and the fertilizing capacity are independent.
